Toun-nun Integrated Child and Family Centre Public Art Commission by Karen Alsop
The proposed idea is to create an interactive artwork aimed at children, which would encourage them to explore local habitats, animals, and flora and fauna in the area. The interactive activity sculpture will consist of 3 spinning cubes that display photographic art showcasing local habitats and animals. The cubes will cleverly overlap and combine the habitats to create a unique learning experience. If the cubes align to show the correct set of three parts of one of the four habitat artworks, a bonus interactive augmented reality activation will be available to enhance the children’s learning. The objective is to create an engaging and educational experience for children that will spark their curiosity and encourage them to explore the natural world around them.

Collaborating with a construction designer, I will develop a physical interactive sculpture that will be built to last, using weather-resistant materials. To create the artwork, I will utilize photography and photographic art. In addition, I will partner with a signage company to produce printed vinyl for adhering onto the cubes. This signage will be guaranteed for 10 years and replaced as necessary. By combining these elements, I aim to create a durable and visually striking interactive sculpture that will provide a stimulating and educational experience for children exploring local habitats and wildlife.

In order to create a comprehensive and engaging experience for children, I will collaborate with a construction designer to develop a physical interactive sculpture that is both durable and able to withstand the elements. The sculpture will be created using long-lasting materials that will weather well. The photographic art that will be used in the artwork will be designed and produced by myself. Furthermore, I will work with a signage company to produce high-quality, printed vinyl that will be adhered to the cubes. This vinyl will be guaranteed for 10 years and will be replaced as necessary. To enhance the learning experience further, I will create an augmented reality experience using the latest technology and techniques. Through this, children will be able to fully immerse themselves in the local habitats and wildlife, gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world around them.

Collaborating with the community, I will discover local habitats and select suitable locations for a photographic art piece. To involve local schools and ELCs, I will host a presentation on-site. Local wildlife rescuers will be contacted to capture the stories of native wildlife through social media and BTS videos. With the guidance of local educators, the project’s learning opportunities will be further developed, including the augmented reality content.
